Growing it out

Growing it out

Or, things I didn't expect to be different and difficult when I moved to Germany.

I can't find a barbershop in Stuttgart.

In London there was, if not one on every streetcorner, at least one in every High Street. There appears to be none at all in Stuttgart.

There are plenty of hairdressers, mind you, and many of them will do men's hair too. But a hairdresser is not a barber.

A true barbershop is a tiny hole-in-the-wall place. It has cracked leather chairs and hairsnippings on the floor, and a stack of three year old soft-porn magazines to read while you wait (upscale barbershops replace these with real-estate or financial services mags, but the principle and the antiquity remain the same). A barber shortens your hair in ten minutes, and charges you ten bucks for it.

My inner cheapskate is really objecting to spending an hour and sixty bucks in a hairdressing salon.

Perhaps I'll go back to buzzcutting my hair myself on Saturday mornings.

In other news it is miserably hot and muggy. I'm really suffering in this heat and humidity. Roll on Autumn, I say.

Oh dear, 'buzzcutting' gave me tachychardia! Also, who is that man?? Your hair is wavy, who knew!

I am looking for a hairdresser, have been for months but have a wedding Saturday and, well, it's all bleak. BLEAK.

They're even dwindling here, barbershops. Scary. I don't want my hair dressed, I just want it cut!

Buzz or let your lovely locks (they really are) grow luxuriant and long. I also prefer to go to a barbershop, but there are only two around, kept in business by the dwindling military presence and a lot of immigrants.

I think you looks great...
I've got a head of curls too, and I think they are very cool. However, I color mine because I'm way too afraid of ageing, and being over 50, its staring me literally right in the face.

If it is not too late, can you wait until Friday? The Italian barbers are still there on 13th and they are exactly what you are looking for, right down to the soft porn.

Thank you, my dears! I've already done the ponytail thing, over a decade ago now, so I don't need to do that again. But I will keep it longer.

Sis, the barber on 13th was in my mind as I wrote. It's not too late so I will definitely go there on Friday morning.
