Public Service Announcement

Just so that you don't think that I am totally blind in my admiration of Apple's very wonderful computers:

I found a minor but very annoying problem with my Mac Mini Intel Core Solo running Mac OS 10.4.6: it couldn't print to my HP LaserJet 1160. (I'm spelling this out explicitly so that other people with the same problem might find it on Google.) The printer was correctly attached (System Profiler saw it), the print queue was properly created, but the Mac couldn't open the connection and deactivated the queue.

Fortunately, the solution is quite simple: remove the file named "hp_LaserJet_1160_series.kext" from the directory /System/Library/Extensions, and then restart the computer. (It's not necessary to recreate the print queue - unless you previously deleted it of course.)

The reason is that the HP driver is too old (2002, ye Gods; and no, there is nothing newer on their website) and got in the way. The Mac talks to the printer perfectly well without it.

WARNING: messing around in the /System directory is a good way to convert your Mac into a paperweight. Do not make any other changes or touch any other file in this directory. Proceed at your own risk, don't try this at home, your mileage may vary.

It is nice that you're warning others and helping them. I don't really need this information, but really like that you are caring enough to help those who may need it in the future. That's pretty cool.
