Reading list for March 2006

Currently reading
Rudyard Kipling, Collected Stories - still
José Saramago, Die Stadt der Blinden

I haven't read much this month, due to pressure of work. The Kipling remains a delight - and a great surprise. Without looking it up, now: what were his dates (when did he live?) I thought that he spanned the nineteenth century and so was very surprised to find several stories set in the trenches of the First World War. Wrong by two generation: he was born at the end of the American Civil War (1865), and lived until the eve of the Second World War (1937).

After many months of struggle, I have given up on Proust en Français, it reached a point where the effort of reading was greater than the pleasure it afforded. Left it a decade too late, I should have read it earlier on when my French was still fluent.
