Thought for the day

"We will have peace with the Arabs when they love their children more than they hate us."

Golda Meir

Said of Israel, but true for the rest of us non-Muslims too. (Thanks to Stephanie for the quote.)

As a pacifist, there is a level on which I agree with this, with regard to all the Arab and other people who wage wars. But I would not like to be lumped, and judged, under a heading like 'the Arabs', would you?

Huh. I guess you could say that Bush doesn't love his children very much.

And I agree with Jean because I'm sure there are a lot of Arabic people who are wishing the war had never started.

Interesting quote, but also true to any groups that are fighting.

I think I'd need context to understand where this quote is coming from.

Is this a veiled criticism? How do Arab parents NOT love their children as much as anyone else does? Perhaps she is referring to Fanatical Islamist parents who put them in schools where they're brain-washed to hate others based on religion.

To add to what Jean said, it seems strange the quote makes such an alienating distinction of Arabs as if there is not one single case of peace between them and Israelis. I imagine there are many peaceful interactions between "Arabs" and Isrealis and many cases where the two are one.

Besides, I don't know how you test the emotional energy of any parent for their child. This quote seems to suggest hate in itself -as if the 'Arabs' are all bad parents somehow. I'm lost as to where the suggestion comes from. Love is kind of instinctive, isn't it?

I suppose hate is too. Anger is a human emotion, although I wouldn't say it automatically results is war.

The best way not to be hated is to offer friendship unconditionally.
